Zamo Gwala is a Co-founder of Precision Medical Laboratories is Qualified Medical Technologist with the National Diploma and B. Tech degree in Biomedical Technology. She is currently completing her Master’s in Business Administration (MBA).

Her journey began 20 years ago, when she qualified at the Institution which now known as Durban University of Technology. She worked at NHLS in many hospitals across KZN during which she was a student trainer in Microbiology department and mentoring the newly qualified Medical Technologists.

She then moved to Research sector of Medical Technology where she was involved in the setup of a new laboratory at the Perinatal HIV Research Unit in Gauteng. She designed and monitored a Quality Assurance Program that was implemented across 12 HIV Voluntary Testing Clinics across Soweto, ensuring the high quality of testing and accurate results.

The 8 years spent in Research included 6 years working in different HIV trials at the Medical Research Council, where she was awarded many opportunities to present at international AIDS conferences.

In the past 4 years, she has gained tremendous experience in running one of the private medical laboratories in the greater Durban area. This afforded her an opportunity to apply her excellent leadership, investigative, analytical and interpersonal skills.
This experience inspired the extremely exciting birth of Precision Medical Laboratories.

Thobile Phakathi has an extensive experience in managing and running of the laboratory. Her particular interest is ensuring that quality is maintained and turnaround time is met. She is a DUT graduate in Biomedical technology in Clinical Pathology. Over the last 35 years Thobile served as a successful trainer preparing student medical technicians and intern student medical technologists for the board exams at NHLS and achieved 100% pass rate with distinctions some of them amongst KZN top achievers. An outstanding role she executed with ease was the role of Quality Assurance Officer. She prepared laboratories for annual audits and achieved above 75% audit score. Along her journey of more than three decades in the field she also had the opportunity to supervise the Microbiology department with proficiency and also have to train old and newly qualified medical technologists to be able to interpret the differential smears. She achieved 100% in peripheral smears proficiency in Haematology during her journey in NHLS. Her supervision skills landed her an opportunity to manage a laboratory under NHLS.
